Dear Mr Khushal, The Reichert-Meissl value was a very old test applied to lauric oils, mainly PKO and CNO, to determine their purity. The Lauric oils are particularly rich in short chain fatty acids to which that test responds. Low values indicated that the oil was not pure lauric. This test needed a lot of skill and a whole day to carry out and it has now been replaced by GLC, which is much quicker and much more accurate. Regards, FP (20.12.2011)

Dear Mr Narnoly, Palm sludge oil is not mentioned in the PORAM specs or any other recognised body and no one has bothered to do any survey to collect data on it. I expect its TFM to be 90% min and it will make soap. Its colour varies from light brown to dark brown but its smell which is reasonable if it is fresh, can be unacceptable if it is old and so will be any soap made from it. Dear Mr Loepi, I have not seen any figures for the velocity of sound in any oil. As for the viscosity at 25-30C, that temperature is well below the melting point, so I cannot see how you can be measuring its flow. I think as you have paid good money to buy an instrument offered as suitable for CPO, it is up to the sellers to give you all the information required for its use, or there is no sale. Dear Mr/Mrs ML, If your contract was for palm olein to PORAM specifications, and if your test method was the one specified, then your comments are correct and you have good grounds for complaining, or even asking for compensation. But if you just bought palm olein without any specifications, or your test methods were different, then you do not have much grounds for complaining. In any case, bring it to your suppliers' attention and see what they say. Even if they do nothing, at least they will know you are watching them. There is a lot of inferior olein around. Dear Ms Tessinni, Sorry to learn you still have problems. The ingredients you gave me for 50Kg batch only add up to 40Kg, what are the other 10Kg? Do not worry about revealing your formula, we can leave out any thing you consider secret, if you indicate it. In the mean time, if time is pressing, you can make a laboratory batch with as little water as you think possible without demoulding problems and then dry it enough to reach TFM 74%. Dear Mr Mandi, As far as I know both PO and Palm Olein are used and normally the milk fat is taken out and sold separately as it is more expensive, and replaced by the vegetable fat. Also most of the people who buy this product want to avoid eating animal fat. But for more details you will have to ask an expert in dairy products as I am only expert in oils and fats. 1292	I work in a vegetable oil producing company in Africa. Our refinery is 150tons capacity per day. Our raw materials are crude palm kernel oil(CPKO) and crude palm oil(CPO). When we make crude palm oil, our capacity reaches between 130-150tons per day but when we refine CPO we always encounter problems, our capacity always ranges from 39 to 65 tons per day. When i spoke to one of my colleques he said the ffa of the CPO is high (between 5 to 9%) and due to our company standard of ffa of RBDPO of 5% or less, it is unttainable for us to get a high flow rate, thereby our production would be low. I do not agree with him, i think he he not getting smothing right but i have no authority in this field. this problem has been persistent for a while and we have been accumulating losses. What do you think our problems are? What is the proper flow rate for a 150tons capacity refinery? What do you think we are doing wrong? What do you suggest we do? I look forward to your reply. Dear Mr Kuku, Unfortunately what you wrote to me has many serious mistakes in some important points and I do not understand it. What do you mean when you say you make PO? What do you mean when you say the yield from crude PO is 130-150T but from CPO is 39-65T ? The two oils are the same. You say you are aiming for FFA 5%, do you mean 0.5%? You only tell me that you refine, but nothing about the design of your plant or the processing details. I think the main cause is probably the quality of your CPO, but problems such as yours cannot be solved from a distance by a few lines from me, you need a visit from the plant designer or a consultant, or try different methods your selves. Dear Mr Mishra, Theoretical calculations of such things are not good enough. Even in the same factory refining losses vary quite a lot. The best way is to measure the losses in your own factory and take the average and range. In older days in US, refineries only bought a parcel of crude oil after testing a sample. Dear Mr Kojo, I think cracking is the worst fault in soap. It is good that you have given me your oil/fat blend, but in order to answer your question, I also need to know the %age water (including that used in the lye) and total fillers. Also what process you use, cold, semi-boiled or boiled and whether you give any working to the soap or you just pour into moulds. Dear Ms Tesseini, I have some difficulty with your English but I understand your total fatty matter (TFM) is about 60% and you wish to raise it to over 75%. That will be good because in some countries toilet soap with TFM 75% min. is referred to as 1st class, 65% min. as 2nd class and below 65% is not permitted. Anything in your formula which is not fat, reduces its TFM. You did not say how much water or anything else you add, but it seems to me the easiest way to increase your TFM is to reduce the amount of water you add, or dry the soap for much longer. Better do a little of both, you have to take out 20 parts water for every 100 parts soap. This is quite a lot and it will also increase your costs proportionally. Regards, FP (04.12.2011)

Dear M. Franisca, Correlations are interesting and quite useful, but unfortunately the cloud point is not part of the PORAM specifications and MPOB has not published the kind of information you want. Suppliers quote their own odd figures but if the conditions of the test are different the results can be anything you want. Correlations can be linear or curvilinear and to find the shape and parameters with reasonable accuracy requires at least 25 data points well spread along the range. And the data must come from the same laboratory, the same operator, using the same methods. All I can advise you to do is to collect as many values as you can, plot them on graph paper and see what it looks like.Regards, FP (30.11.2011)

Dear Mr Pua, Your question is very interesting and shows you are a thinking man. Yes, most of the time the price of CNO will follow the direction of PO price, but not every time and not very proportionally. In scientific language we say there is a correlation but not an exact mathematical relationship. A drop in the price of PO will exert an influence on the price of CNO to go down too, but in the market there are many other forces which have an effect and if for example, there appear news of low CNO stock, unexpectedly high chemical demand, plant disease in the Philippines etc., then its price may well go up. Also PKO and CNO are in the lauric group which means they they are chemically different from the other oils and so their price correlation is strongest against each other. Regards, FP (25.11.2011)

Dear Mr Danial, You are telling me some of your CPO values are high but not how high, so I can only be equally vague. I expect your refining loss will be higher than usual and so will be your bleaching earth requirements, bleaching loss and probably the final colour. Also the RBD oil will probably have higher rate of quality deterioration. However you will also get a higher amount of PFAD equal to the FFA of the oil going into the deodoriser.
